Tam's Tall Tales

Dinosaurs Return!
Edinburgh Zoo, just visible from Tam's editorial base, is a rather wonderful institution. Its fine collection of penguins are housed in Europe's largest penguin pool and the daily parade is a sure-fire hit with children and older visitors. The two pandas, who have yet to produce a cub, are also a big draw.

But now the zoo bosses have added a mechanical dinosaur to the mix. Velma the velociraptor is a 13ft long model and has computerised controls, meaning she can roar, blink and move her head from side to side. Just the thing for a family day out, really. Eventually she will be joined by other models.

According to the Zoo, "Dinosaurs Return! will offer visitors to the Zoo a chance to discover a lost world with the aim of raising awareness about the very real threat of extinction faced today by many endangered species. Featuring 14 incredible life size animatronic model creatures (11 adults, 2 babies and a nest), the giants will take up residence at the top of the hill.
