- Dr Khan and His Spurtle Cooked Up The Porridge Prize

World Porridge Making Championships
NHS renal consultant Dr Izhar Khan, from Aberdeen, roasted the competition at October's World Porridge Making Championships in the Highlands. The graphic on the right is by James Ross, voa Wikimedia and shows the Strathspey Pipe Band at Cairn Hotel, Carrbridge.

Dr Khan beat off competition from around the world to be collect the Golden Spurtle in Carrbridge,in Badenoch and Strathspey in the Scottish Highlands.

The doctor, who works at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, is a firm believer in the health benefits of porridge, encouraging his patients to eat the Scots dish.

He said "I achieved my aim to win and take the golden spurtle to the Granite City. I started eating porridge seven years ago. It is simple, versatile, healthy and very affordable.

Dr Khan used a specially made spurtle, the key porridge making tool, crafted by one of his patients. Competitors travel from around the world to take part in the World Porridge Making Championships, an annual competition to create the best oatmeal dishes.
