None for the Road

On 5 December, a new lower drink-drive limit was introduced in Scotland. The limit in Scotland is now 50mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood, compared with the old limit of 80mg, which is still in place in England and Wales. Someone drinking just one glass of wine could be over this lower limit and anyone drinking heavily the night before could be caught over the limit when driving the next morning.

The message is getting through. The number of motorists caught drink-driving in Scotland during the festive period has dropped by almost a third since last year. While road safety organisations are delighted there are some long faces in bars and clubs where consumption of alcoholic drinks has dropped dramatically.
