Tam's Tall Tales

- From Colonsay Round the Wired World

What Colour is That Dress?

Scottie and I are not generally renowned for our cutting edge dress sense, though on high days and holidays he is known to sport a natty tie pin to keep the Scottie tartan cravat in prime position

But we cannot ignore the social media sensation of the last month - the colour of that dress. It started innocently enough, 21 year old Caitlin McNeill, a 21-year-old musician from Colonsay, a small Hebridean island off the west coast of Scotland took a picture of a dress and asked for views on its colour via her web page on Tumblr.

Some people saw it as blue and black - others as white and gold. It became a viral internet sensation with people from Japan to Florida adding their tuppence worth.

Celebrities, such as the singer Taylor Swift, joined in and soon there was a perfect storm raging round the fashionista world

Caitlin said: 'I thought my followers on Tumblr would maybe have a good reaction, but I never would have considered that Taylor Swift and Mindy Kaling would be tweeting about it'

She added in a comment on her band's Facebook page which read: 'It seems like we've caused quite the stir online! This is madness!'

After much debate from scientists as well as the couture movement, the answer appeared to be that the perceived colour of the dress depended on the background. A definitive explanation is given on Wired Magazine

Other dressy material can be found on the Mail Online at : Daily Mail and Daily Telegraph.
