In the last census in 1991, Glasgow as Scotland's largest city had a population of 662,954, followed by Edinburgh with 401,910. The City of Aberdeen has 189,707 inhabitants and the City of Dundee has 158,981. Inverness, often called, unofficially, the "Capital of the Highlands", was made a city in 2000.

Paisley (population 75,526) is not a city (a designation accorded by the monarch) and neither is the "new" town of East Kilbride (population 70,422).
