Abbotsford was the the house which Sir Walter Scott built for himself overlooking the river Tweed. He was extravagant both in expanding this baronial country mansion and in buying historical Scottish artefacts. In 1826 he found himself 100,000 pounds in debt. He had to work furiously for the next few years and on his death, when the copyrights on some of his books were sold, all his debt was paid.
