Scottish Snippets

Number 631

The Scottish Snippets Newsletter in its original format began in April 1997 and continued in an unbroken series for 591 issues. Although no longer produced in that style, there is now this regular update on the new and updated pages on the Rampant Scotland site including "Scottie's Photo Diary From Scotland".

Scotland Ten Years Ago and Now - July 2002 - July 2012 Here's the next "chapter" in updating some of the news items from Scotland that were included in the Scottish Snippets in July 2002. Ranging from house prices to the economy (both losing ground) and the weather (getting even wetter). But history does repeat itself - Ernie Els won The Open Golf Championship in 2002 - and did it again in 2012! See Scotland Ten Years Ago and Now

Museum of Scotland Updated

When touring round what used to be called the Royal Scottish Museum in Edinburgh following a major upgrade to the Victorian building, I wandered in to the modern "Museum of Scotland" next door. While the old building displays a fascinating collection of covering the animal kingdom and from selected countries around the world, the new building concentrates exclusively on Scottish-related items. My original "Places to Visit" article was written shortly after the new building opened its doors nearly 14 years ago and I realised that since then it has had a number of changes to the exhibits. And of course digital cameras have improved by leaps and bounds since then too. So I've been back to take a lot more photographs and have updated and expanded the original description. There are five pages in this feature with links at the foot to take you to the next page. The starting point is Places to Visit - Museum of Scotland Updated

I'm planning to create a slide show of many of the pictures I took at the Museum of Scotland, including many that didn't get included in the feature pages, but that will be added later.

Battle of Bannockburn New Web Site With the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn approaching and the construction of the new Bannockburn Visitor Centre officially started, the aim is to complete it in time for the 700th anniversary of the battle during the year of the Homecoming in 2014. The new building will house a unique and exciting exhibition where state-of-the-art 3D technology will bring visitors face to face with medieval battle in a way that hasn’t been experienced before. The National Trust for Scotland has launched a new Web site covering the project with a history of the battle, news on the latest archaeological finds, illustrations and video clips and updates on the progress with the new visitor centre and what it will contain. See Battle of Bannockburn.

Next Newsletter

The next newsletter is scheduled for 18 August. If the weather is suitable for photography, I'm planning to attend the World Pipe Band Championships on Glasgow Green on 11 August and produce a slide show covering the event.

Yours aye

Scottie
