On 2 October 1263, King Haakon of Norway (which at that time included Orkney, Shetland and the Western Isles) was defeated by King Alexander III as he attempted a landing at Largs in Ayrshire. Haakon died a few months later and Norway renounced its claim on the Western Isles in 1266.
