Scottish Further Education Unit>
The SFEU provides help and information, events, conference facilities, press notices, conference reports on further education in Scotland. It incorprates the Virtual Learning Centre> developed by the Research Design and Development team of the Scottish Further Education Unit. The aim of the VLC is to support staff involved in the delivery of vocational education and training in Scotland. It provides access to online staff development for subject specialists as well as links to evaluated resources through an information gateway.
Individual colleges in Scotland have their own sites as follows:
Botanical Society of Scotland> exists to promote the study of plants and to exchange botanical knowledge between members.
The Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh > is involved in research and education and their catalogue of living collections and Flora Europea is available with a search engine. The satellite Botanic Garden Benmore > and Logan Botanic Gardens > are also covered. Surprisingly, there are very few graphics throughout these pages. Similarly, St Andrew's Botanic Gardens > has a number of interesting articles but no illustrations.
Schools
Schools on the Web
There is a directory of Boarding Schools in Scotland > with basic information on the 30/40 listed. The Independent Schools Information Service (ISIS)> lists over forty such schools in Scotland.
Scottish Council of Independent Schools> (SCIS) promotes and supports the contribution made by independent schools to education in Scotland. There are details on the Web site of all independent Scottish schools represented by SCIS. You can search for a school's details by specific categories and by location, email an online school and visit its own website.
Parentzone Scotland offers a broad range of information for parents, carers and others responsible for school age children. The website also provides a comprehensive list of links to useful organisations and recent publications. The site also offers an Online Resource offering parents easy access to school information including contact details, school exam results, absence and attendance figures, and some links to school websites.
Schoolhouse Home Education Association offers information and support to parents/carers throughout Scotland who seek to take personal responsibility for the education of their children, families who have chosen, or are contemplating home-based education; and those who wish to safeguard the right of families to educate in accordance with their own philosophy and with due regard to the wishes and feelings of their children.

Scottish Primary School Page> provides information of interest to parents and teachers of children at primary schools throughout Scotland and offers members of School Boards access to a number of resources, including the full text of the Scottish Consumer Council's booklet Law of the School : School Boards. There are also pointers to key resources on the web and links to Scottish Primary Schools web pages, and the postal addresses and telephone numbers of every primary school in Scotland.

Old School Mates> is the Scottish section of a UK-wide site which allows you to register with details of your old school and see if others who went there have signed up too. A UK-wide site with similar aims which includes Scotland is Friends Reunited with a database listing over 40,000 UK Secondary and Primary Schools, Colleges and Universities. You have to register in order to be able to access the database.
Clackmannanshire Council Education & Community Services>
Education and Community Services is responsible for libraries, leisure and recreation and training as well as schools. The site provides a description of every school> in the county and information on living and teaching in Clackmannanshire, including vacancies.
Education, Training and ResearchShort, practical, hands-on plastering and bricklaying courses suitable for those wishing to tackle their own projects at home or tradesmen wishing to improve their skills with a maximum of 5 students per course. The training workshop is located close to Dumfries in the Scottish Borders.
This UK charitable organisation is headquartered at their Community and International Leadership Centre at Staffin on the Isle of Skye. It is dedicated to leadership and community development. They design, develop and deliver residential experiences focusing on eliciting leadership potential from all corners of society. Client groups range from up and coming corporate and government leaders to business owners to seasoned social entrepreneurs.
Consciousness in the Natural World Project>
This is based in the Philosophy Department at the University of Stirling. It aims to bring together philosophers from the Scottish Universities and beyond to allow progress to be made on the problem of explaining the place of conscious psychological life within the natural world. Past and present papers by contributors are available on the site together with general links to philosophy web pages.
This competition and schloarship has been created to encourage and develop the culinary skills and talents of young working chefs in Scotland. The Scholarship will be judged by a selection of Scotland's Michelin starred chefs and will give the winner the opportunity to work with some of the best in the food and catering industry. The entrants are judged on competence, ability to work with ingredients, individual flair and are tested on preparation, timing and presentation. The winner carries out a series of internships, working with some of the best in the food and catering world, both at home and abroad.
There are over 40 courses so there is something for everyone - whether you’ve never cooked in your life before or whether you are a good home cook. They teach simple techniques that you can use again and again and encourage you to explore a wide spectrum of flavours.
Scottish School of Hypnotherapy
Provides students with the knowledge, confidence and competence to become effective clinical hypnotherapists. Located in Glendaruel on the Cowal peninsula, the school offers accredited courses at Practitioner level and Postgraduate. The training is carried out by fully experienced tutors, supplemented by specialist lecturers and visiting practising hypnotherapists.
Created by lecturers at Edinburgh's Telford College, the New Curiosity Shop aims to provide high quality online courses in a wide range of topics. The courses are designed to encourage a sense of curiosity, generate a sense of discovery, and provide an enjoyable and supportive learning experience. They encourage learning for the pleasure of learning, stimulate thinking, provoke questions and provide opportunities for students to explore ideas. In addition to providing all course material online, there is interaction with a course tutor and other students via forums and online chat.
Successful florist Carol Pike set up the Scottish School of Floristry which operates events, workshops and demonstrations tailored both for florists and for those with a keen interest in the top end of floral design for the home as well as anyone looking to immerse themselves in the more creative aspects of working with flowers. Courses are run at St. George's Studios, St. Georges Road, Glasgow.
Accelerated learning techniques with worksheets and notes for students and parent/teachers to assist in spelling, reading mental arithmetic and learning the time. Particularly helpful for dyslexics. Also covers exam nerves and anxiety.

This is an international training organisation based in Dundee providing practical training programmes - on personal, corporate or global levels.
J.B. Management (Scotland) Ltd
J.B. Management, based in Ayrshire, is a UK City & Guilds Approved Training Centre covering Occupational Health and Safety training and NVQ training. They can accommodate distance learning, through email, fax, video conferencing and telephone communications.
A teaching organisation that seeks to develop learning through enterprise in a fun, exciting and active way with hands-on experience running a business, learning the key skills and gaining self motivation and confidence along the way.
Learning + Teaching Scotland >
This is an organisation which incorporates the former SCET and SCCC. It is the government's independent advisory body on the curriculum for all 3-18 year-olds in Scottish schools. LT Scotland provide advice, support, resources and staff development that enhance the quality of educational experiences with a view to improving attainment and achievement and promoting lifelong learning in the pre-school, primary and secondary education sectors in Scotland.
Based in Fife, Mabon provide training in managing people, communication and personal development to companies throughout Scotland and the United Kingdom, specialising in developing in-house courses, tailored to the the companies needs and a series of open/public courses held in Burntisland, Fife.
Live Language School of English Language
Accredited by the British Council, Live Language offers English Language Tuition for those wanting to learn English for their leisure as well as for those who have a specific purpose for improving their English. Small class sizes allow them to give students more personal attention thus helping them learn at a faster rate. They offer General English, IELTS classes as well as Business English classes.
This is a database of everything to do with Scotland, all translated into Mandarin Chinese (including pronunication guide), hosted on the website of Inbox Education (Glasgow based producer of educational resources, including a market leading Chinese course). It includes a free lesson for use in schools where kids are learning Manadarin. So if you ever want to know how to say “Nessie” in Chinese, it’s “Ni-si-hu shui-gui”! It is hoped that Chinese students will add their own contributions.
This is an education consultancy which specialises in in-service courses for teachers and lecturers and in designing curriculum materials with Internet training a speciality. The related Cyberschools> is the Herald's monthly Internet column for education, written by Media Matters. They also provide a useful Media Links> page with pointers to resources and media companies.
The four MANs across Scotland have the capability to interconnect the institutions in a metropolitan area at speeds up to 155 megabits per second to enhance the video conferencing capabilities between sites and the extent of distributed multimedia teaching applications. Preparation of, and wide spread access to multimedia off-line and on -line teaching material willl become more of a reality via this system.
Multimedia Integrated Conference for Europe (MICE) >
The grandiosely titled Multimedia Integrated Conference for Europe National Support Centre for Scotland is a collaboration between the Multimedia Communications Group at the University of Glasgow and the Computing Services department of the University of Edinburgh. There is an archive of conferencing tools indexed through the WWW server and documentation to help with the installation and use of the tools supported by MICE.
North Ayrshire Library and Information Service
The organisation provides an education resource service for pupils in primary school project topics, Pre-Five and Early Literacy Resources including interactive sites and numeracy materials. For secondary level, there are reading and literacy resources, support for learning, staff support sites, educational gateways.
Offering Royal Yachting Association recognised facilities, OffshoreScotland Sea School is based at Largs Yacht Haven, Ayrshire. Personal tuition is provided by qualified staff in practical and theoretical courses for the complete novice or for specific RYA sailing qualifications. Yacht charter cruises are also available to Scottish and Irish waters.
The Scottish arm of the National Grid for Learning (a UK government initiative which stresses the important role for Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in education and learning). Parentzone has produced this site collating resources for parents and guardians of school age children. The site provides assistance and resources for parents, in choosing the right school for their children, student's progress, supporting children's learning, school curriculum and assessment, dealing with bullying, and other aspects of schooling. A collection of relevant publications is also available.
Quine - Scottish Women's Site>
Using the North-East of Scotland word for a girl as its title, the Scottish Women's Site has links to a range of pages related to gender studies, research and campaigning on behalf of women's equality.
Renfrewshire Education’s Additional Support Needs Forum
This forum has been provided to encourage the exchange of information between parents of children who need additional support in the short or long term because of bullying, behavioural or learning difficulties, deaf or blindness, bereavement, school attendance issues or being gifted children. Visitors to the forum can read the various threads but must log on to be able to add their comments.
The Society is the prime learned society in Scotland and was established in the Scottish Age of Enlightenment. It covers science, arts, letters, proffesions, industry and commerce. The site lists past fellows of the Society.
This organisation is based in the Highlands and works with European partners on community led rural development projects. They organise study visits and tours to introduce visitors from the UK and all over the world, to Scottish rural development practitioners, administrators, projects and beneficiaries. Training is provided on the effective administration of EU funding and can help organisations, businesses and community groups to initiate and deliver projects.
The Centre for Scottish Studies at Simon Fraser University provides a focal point for faculty, students and members of the community interested in exploring Scottish history and culture and the impact of Scots on other cultures and nations, including in particular Canada. For example, they have embarked on an oral history project entitled, "Scottish Voices from the West - the Story of Scots in Modern British Columbia".
Scottish Research Information System
This organistaion provides a hub for information on academic and industry research in Scotland. The site offers several sections, including sources of funding, a list of inventions and research groups. SRIS is a starting point for finding out about Scotland’s research, development, consultancy and innovation resources, bringing together the capabilities of universities and institutes in Scotland, and organizations across the world that can make good use of these resources.
The official web site for the Scottish Council of the Scout Association serving more than 45,000 scout members. The site gives information on Camp Sites and news about Scottish Scouts plus Beavers, Cubs and Venture Scouts. Individual Scout organisations with their own Web sites include Ayrshire Scouting> with Scouting events in Ayrshire, Scout Camps, Ayrshire Scout Districts and Scout links. 1st & 6th Ayrshire Sea Scout Group> has a history of the group and details of the Beavers, Cubs, Sea Scouts and Venture Scouts.
ScoutBase> gives a UK-wide perspective but has a database of the Scouts around the country, including Scotland.
Solutions in Mind is dedicated to providing the highest quality NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) training in Scotland. The company runs a range of NLP courses in Glasgow and Stirling.
This is a language learning company situated in Buckie in Scotland, offering "Total Immersion Plus" - a new method for learning or tutoring any language with the aim of being fluent in just 200 hours. They specialise in Scottish Gaelic, although the method is applicable to any language.
The Scottish Studies Home Page of the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, co-ordinates the graduate study of Scottish history and literature in Scotland and in settlements in Canada. Their library has one of the largest collections of Scottish material outside of Scotland and is particularly strong on genealogical material.
University of Stirling - Short Courses
The Division of Academic Innovation and Continuing Education (DAICE) offers courses in such subjects as Scottish History, Culture, Society & Natural Heritage, Creative Arts, Music and Dance.
Young Enterprise Scotland (YES) is an education business partnership activity offering young people who are still at school, or college, the opportunity to form and run their own companies to develop enterprise and personal skills through "learning by doing". The site explains how to participate in YES.

Scottish Libraries Across the INTErnet - SLAINTE>
SLAINTE, otherwise known as Scottish Libraries Across the INTErnet aims to provide access to information for and about the library and information community in Scotland. As such it has created a large database of basic information about libraries in Scotland. There is a search engine and the index allows you to get to reach a page an each library in Scotland and establish address, telephone number and, most important, an email address.
